The Woodruff key is the small semi-circular metal key that locates the flywheel in the correct rotational position on the crankshaft, ensuring the ignition timing is set accurately relative to piston position. It is designed to shear on hard impact — such as when the chain snags or the saw strikes a solid object — acting as a sacrificial component to protect the crankshaft and flywheel from more serious damage. A sheared Woodruff key causes the flywheel to slip out of position, resulting in incorrect ignition timing, difficult starting or a complete no-spark condition.
