When the crankcase gasket starts to leak, air enters the engine at the joint and upsets the fuel-to-air ratio, causing the engine to run lean and lose power. A failing cylinder head gasket allows combustion pressure to escape, making the engine hard to start and reducing cutting performance. A worn exhaust muffler gasket lets exhaust gases escape at the port joint, increasing noise and reducing back pressure.
