It seals the joint between the crankcase and cylinder, keeping the crank chamber airtight so the two-stroke engine can build proper compression. Once this seal hardens or compresses with age, air starts leaking into the crank chamber, which typically shows up as rough or unstable idle or difficulty starting. Fitting a fresh set whenever the crankcase or cylinder is split for servicing restores the seal.
