These thin gaskets have one job — keep every bit of intake air passing through the carburettor’s own metering circuits rather than sneaking in around the mounting face. Once they lose their shape from heat cycling or get disturbed pulling the carburettor off for cleaning, a gap opens up at the joint and unmetered air starts leaking into the intake tract. That extra, unaccounted-for air throws off the fuel-air mixture, and the engine typically responds with a hunting idle or rpm that drifts even after the carburettor has been adjusted correctly.
