Positioned ahead of the carburettor, the air filter stops dust and debris from entering the engine while letting clean air through for combustion — particularly important on a generator, which typically runs continuously under load. As the filter media clogs with use, airflow to the carburettor is restricted, pulling the fuel-air mixture rich and leading to reduced power, overheating, higher fuel consumption or hard starting. Fitting a new air filter restores correct airflow to the carburettor, letting the engine draw the correct air-fuel ratio again.
