These are the joints that keep the engine airtight — the crankcase for pulling in and compressing the fuel-air mixture, the cylinder base for holding combustion pressure, the muffler for containing exhaust gases, and the carburettor faces for accurate air metering. A rebuild tends to disturb all of them at once, and a single worn gasket left in place is usually what brings the job back with hard starting, weak power, an exhaust leak, or a hunting idle.
